April 1999's Go Answer of the Month

Dia 1 - From BGJ 20.

Dia 1

I was reading an old issue of the British Go Journal - issue 20 from July 1973. This problem was posed without any solution - I don't know if the solution is in issue 21!

So, Black to play and kill.
If you know your tesuji, you may get it wrong!

Dia 2 - Aberant tesuji.

Dia 2

Decending to 1 is often a tesuji, and if Black mentally pictures the sequence with white 2 to black 7 here, it does indeed work. However ...

Dia 3 - Not a tesuji.

Dia 3

In fact White plays 2 here and lives comfortably.

Dia 4 - Reduce first.

Dia 4

The killing move is the reduction with 1 here. That enables the tesuji move to work later.
