Dia 1 White 1 is wrong.

This 'White to rescue his 4 stones' problem is from Yutopian's "Art of Go - Connecting stones". In the problem the correct answer is not White 1 here. Feel free to solve Yutopian's problem. The answer diagrams do not discuss this White 1, but I presume that it fails.

Your mission this month is to prove it fails.

Dias 3 & 4 Why this month's problem's White 1 fails.

4 and 6 are sacrifices which eventually leads White into a shortage of liberties. After 10 White cannot connect.

If White plays 9' differently...

Dia 5 White still fails.

9 takes the ko and threatens to capture the next stone, relieving the pressure on white. Black 10' cannot connect at 12 due a liberty shortage, so Black must capture two stones with 10. That sets up a snapback, so White cannot capture the black stone he is after and so he recaptures one at . This lets Black connect at 12 and White has failed.

Dia 6 This black 2 fails.
