April 2005's Go Answer of the Month

Dia 1 Status?

Dia 1

This is from a West Surrey club DFK (double figure kyu) game.

First Black to play...

Dia 2 Black can live in seki.

Dia 2

After white 4, neither party can atair the other without putting themselves in atari.Thus seki.

In fact it is still seki without White 4. Black's only move is to capture by playing in the corner and then stalemate.

Black can also get a seki by playing 1' at 3.

All other moves (can) turn into ko.

Dia 3 If Black needs a ko to win.

Dia 3
5 = ko threat; 6 = ko answer; 7 at 1.

This is a direct ko both ways for life with territory. If Black wins he gets 10 points, if White wins White gets 23 points.

In some of the sequences, White has the option of turning the ko in to a seki.

Next White to play...

Dia 4 White can get a ko.

Dia 4
5 = ko threat.

The best White can do is an indirect ko where both sides have to ignore 2 threats to live.

For Black to win: 7 takes ko, 8 & 9 are threat and answer, 10 retakes ko, 11 is an ignored threat and 12 captures the White stones.

For White to win the ko: 6' answers the ko threat, 7 takes the ko in the corner, 8 is an ignored ko threat, 9 fills a black liberty, 10 retakes the ko, 11 & 12 are ko threat and answer, 13 retakes the ko, 14 is a second ignored ko threat, and 15 captures the black stones.
