Problem of the month
March 2004's Go Answer of the Month
Dia 1 Takagawa Kaku v. Go Seigen.
This is a bit of an experimental problem - it may not work.
Anyway The first 61 moves of a pro game are shown here. What I want
to do is to look at each move and see if a proverb (or similar) can be
found which "explains" the move. For example: 1= This corner is good
etiquette; 2=Corners then sides then centre; etc.
As you see below, I've only managed find proverbs for about half
the moves, and some of those are a little dubious. If you can add or
improve on this, please email me.
- Ettiquette: "Play move 1 on the right on your opponent's side".
- Corners then sides then centre.
- Corners then sides then centre.
- Corners then sides then centre.
- Make an enclosure with your unbalanced corners - or prevent your
opponent making one.
- Make an enclosure with your unbalanced corners - or prevent your
opponent making one.
-
- Contact plays are for defence - when outnumbered as white is here.
-
- Makes a "Hane at the head of two stones".
- If in doubt cut - (Is this a real proverb or a kyu-players pseudo
proverb?).
- Capture the cutting stone.
- Sacrifice two rather than just one.
- Capture the cutting stone / Keep your stones connected.
-
-
- Hane at the head of two stones.
-
-
-
-
-
- Only a fool fails to connect after a peep.
-
- Make a dual purpose move: My extension which stops his extension.
-
- Diagonally attach to a knight's approach if it is already pincered.
- "Stand up" after the contact play.
-
- Make a base.
- Make a base.

- Make a base.
- Once the sides are sorted, move towards the centre. / Separate two
opponent groups.
- Once the sides are sorted, move towards the centre. / Strengthen
one of the two weaker groups.

-
- Cap to block access to the centre.
