May 1996's Go Answer of the Month

Dia 1 - Black to play.

Dia 1

There are only six possible black moves. This should be do-able in your head.

Dia 2 - What if Black tenukis?

Dia 2

Black has to answer at 1 at 2 to prevent white getting an eye.

It is a seki (Black 4 is unnecessary and bad play - just shown to emphasise sekiness.)

Dias 3 & 4 - Wrong Black moves.

Dia 3   Dia 4

Sekis despite Black playing first.

Dias 5 & 6 - You must split White up.

Dia 5

The throw-in of Black 1 achieves the result, leading to ...

Dia 6

Where obviously black either captures two single white stones for two eyes, or he captures a group of four white stones for two big eyes.
